A LOT has happened in the last seven years since we posted here at Middlebrook Farm School. Much of what has happened is entirely forgettable thanks to the COVID. This included the abandonment of the greenhouse and gardens after our Family Consumer Science teacher decided to move on to other pursuits. What greenhouse you say? Yes, since our last post here The Wilton Education Foundation gave us a grant to construct a greenhouse that is really incredible. Incredible in what it could be. And over the last few years another partner, Mrs. Starr, has joined us at Middlebrook Farm School. Last year we worked together through an educator fellowship to design a project within the school community that would bring members of the local community as a whole to help support students, families, teachers, and the school mission. We started partnerships with our local Special Education services, PTA, Ambler Farm, Wilton Garden Club, and others to begin the planning for a possible garden based program that would be primarily for a learners with the most complex needs.
Check out our final project video.
Since then we have started restoring the greenhouse and in mid January we started planting seeds in the four raised beds inside. These include scallion, leek, radish, butter crunch lettuce, Romaine lettuce, Swiss chard, arugula, kale, spinach, oak leaf lettuce, carrot, collard, and turnip.
The plan for these seedlings is that they are to be mostly a proof of concept of what is possible in the space so that when we bring our coalition back together people can have a visual for what we are talking about.
Thanks for checking us out, and please don't hesitate to reach out with any questions.
